Making Your Education Happen

On this page you will find a links to some of the most prestigious national scholarships in America. Applying to these is an extremely worthwhile process that can reward highly-gifted students like you with money but can also bring exposure, prestige and wonderful extra-academic experiences. Some of the world's most noted scholars, politicians, authors and artists have benefited from these and, as some HC students already have, you can join their company. Apply today and you will gain exposure and notoriety among faculty and staff and when will be better prepared to apply to graduate school or your dream job. Andrew A. Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities:

The Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Studies supports exceptionally promising students who plan to pursue doctoral programs in the humanities. The Fellowship provides one-year merit fellowships of $17,500 as well as tuition and fees.

 

Candidate criteria:

  • college senior or recent graduate

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • submit the results of the Graduate Record Examinations, General Test
  • be entering a graduate program leading to a Ph.D. in a Humanistic Field: American Studies, Art History, Classics, Comparative Literature, Cultural Anthropology, English Literature, Foreign Language and Literature, History, History and Philosophy of Science, Musicology, Philosophy, Political Philosophy, Religious Studies

Final Deadline: early December

 

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship For Excellence:

Barry M. Goldwater awards students pursuing careers in natural science, mathematics, and engineering with up to $7,500 for their remaining undergraduate year(s) of study.

 Candidate criteria:

  • sophomore or junior at the time of application

  • U.S. citizen, national/resident alien 

  • highly competitive grade point average

Final Deadline: early February

Boren UndergradUATE Scholarship for Study Abroad

Awards undergraduate scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $20,000 for summer, semester or year-long study abroad to students proposing study abroad programs in non-western countries.

 Candidate criteria:

  • freshman, sophomore, junior or senior 

  • U.S. citizen

  • apply to a study abroad program related to academic and career goals

Final Deadline: early February

Marshall Scholarships:

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability for undergraduate or graduate study in a British college or university for 2 years in any field of study, with awards averaging £19,000 per year.

Candidate criteria:

  • U.S. citizen

  • have graduated from their undergraduate college or university no more than two years before applying
  • minimum 3.7 G.P.A.

  • hold a bachelor's degree for admission to a British college or university

  • present an academic plan and demonstrate potential to make a significant contribution to society

Final Deadline: early October

Fulbright U.S. Graduate Student Program:

 Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers opportunities for recent graduates, postgraduate candidates, and developing professionals and artists to conduct career-launching study and research abroad.

Candidate criteria:

  • be a U.S. citizen

  • hold a bachelor's degree before the beginning date of the grant

  • present a study plan or project which can be completed in one academic year

Final Deadline: mid October

Harry S. Truman Scholarship:

Recognizes college juniors with exceptional leadership potential and commitment to careers in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education or elsewhere in the public service, providing financial support of a maximum of $3,000 for the senior year and up to $27,000 for graduate study, leadership training, and fellowship with other students committed to making a difference through public service

Candidate criteria:

  • undergraduate junior

  • U.S. citizen

  • minimum 3.0 G.P.A.

  • have a major that permits admission to a graduate program leading to a career in government or public service  

Final Deadline: early February

Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship:

Awards scholarships to seniors or recent graduates planning to attend graduate school. Each award covers a portion of educational expenses, including tuition, living expenses, required fees, and books for the graduate degree chosen. The maximum award is $50,000 p/year for up to 6 years.

 

Candidate criteria:

  • be a college senior or recent graduate
  • have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better
  • plan to begin first graduate degree in fall 2007, and -Be nominated by his or her undergraduate institution.

Final Deadline: mid March

Morris K. Udall Scholarship:

Recognizes college sophomores and juniors who have demonstrated outstanding potential and a commitment to pursuing careers related to environmental public policy, awarding approximately 75 scholarships up to a maximum of $5,000 to cover expense for tuition, fees, books, and room and board.

Candidate criteria:

  • college sophomore or junior at the time of application

  • college grade-point average of at least "B" 

  • U.S. citizen, permanent resident alien, or U.S. national

  • demonstrate commitment and potential to make a contribution to environmental public policy and to foster excellence in the field

 Final Deadline: early March

Rhodes Scholarship
For study towards a master's or second bachelor's degree at the University of Oxford, including tuition and stipend of approximately $7,500 per year.

Candidate criteria:

  • 18 – 24 years of age 

  • U.S. citizen and unmarried 

  •  minimum 3.7 G.P.A.

  • complete the bachelor's degree for admission by an Oxford College 

  • demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, concern for others, and fondness for and success in sports

Final Deadline: late September
