Experiential Learning

The Foundation on Which We Are Built
Internships | Research Assistantships | Community Outreach | Study Abroad

The Honors College takes particular pride in supplementing our outstanding academic program with real-world opportunities in the form of off-campus internships, paid research assistantships, community outreach programs, and the Rutgers Study Abroad program.  Please visit the pages above to learn more about what our students have done and what is currently available.

The heart and soul of an extreme education.
We all learn a great deal from our experiences – from jobs, from travel, from social relationships. Such experiences do not necessarily develop the intellectual and analytical abilities that a university education must foster. Therefore, we rely on methodology for active learning.  For the Honors College, this methodology is Experiential Learning.  Experiential learning requires students to learn in active ways. Although some subjects do not lend themselves to this method, many others can be taught more dynamically in this way.

What is Experiential Education?
Experiential education offers students the chance to learn in practical ways, by doing concrete things, while reflecting on or analyzing those experiences systematically.  It allows students to learn things not taught in conventional curricula, enables students to learn how institutions function, helps them to develop leadership skills and to work collaboratively on problem solving, and it narrows the gap between the world of the university and the world of work.

Experiential Education gives you an edge.
Many students today are seeking the kind of education that prepares them fully for the world of work. One of the great challenges for higher education today is to find ways to integrate the practical and analytical skills needed for success and upward mobility in occupational pursuits. With the wide array of opportunities available right at the doorstep of our campus, and a staff dedicated to helping you every step of the way, The Honors College is uniquely situated to pursue this educational challenge.
