Requirements for Admission and Application Process
Incoming Freshman | Transfer and Continuing Students | How to Apply

Description of PhotoWhat you'll need to get in: With each passing year our program grows and we welcome yet another  bright, motivated and promising freshman class.  We would like to keep growing and continue helping students such as yourself.  The Honors College is by invitation only.  Students may be invited to join the Honors College as entering freshmen, as continuing students, or as transfer students, depending on each student's circumstances.  Each new student means a more diverse community, new perspectives, new opportunities, and a growing alumni network - all prove beneficial to our students.  Therefore, we look forward to welcoming applications and inquiries from students around the world.  If you meet the requirements then ask us questions, visit us, and hopefully we will one day be welcoming you to a first class university education at the Rutgers-Newark Honors
                                             College.

Students entering the Honors College from high school should have:

  • A 1200 SAT and be in the top 10% of class.
  • Minimum High School Course Requirements:4 years of English, 2 years of one foreign language, 3 years of mathematics (algebra I, algebra II, and geometry), 2 years of science, and 5 other academic courses.
  • If you do not meet the requirements above, but still feel you are a strong candidate for the Honors College, please do not hesitate to contact us by going to Contact Us, completing and then sending the short form.

Students entering the Honors College after the first year (Continuing and Transfer Students):

  • Both continuing students on the Rutgers-Newark Campus and students transferring from another university may be eligible to enter the Honors College in their sophomore or junior years.
  • We require a minimum 3.5 GPA to enter the Honors College as a sophomore or junior. Students who have completed one or more semesters at Rutgers and transfer students who can demonstrate membership in a Phi Theta Kappa society or an honors program at their most recent sending institution are given priority consideration.
  • Transfer students and Rutgers-Newark students who enter in their second or third year will not be required to enroll in the Freshman Honors Colloquium or Honors English Composition, but will have to fulfill all other requirements of the Honors College.

How to Apply:

  • Visit the Rutgers Admissions Website
  • On the Application you will have an opportunity to pick the top three colleges at Rutgers for which you would like to apply.  You will be automatically considered for the Honors College provided that you choose any one of the following:  Newark College of Arts and Sciences (NCAS), University College (UC), or Rutgers Business School (RBS).
  • Students applying to joint programs in engineering and pharmacy, or the accelerated BA/MD program will also automatically be considered.
  • Send in your application and good luck!

FYI:
If we would like to interview you or look at additional work from you, we will be in contact with you directly.
